Ripple’s Chris Larsen To Pay For Cameras Over San Francisco’s Streets

Ripple’s Chris Larsen will pay for 1000 cameras over the city of San Francisco and will spend his crypto fortune on installing surveillance over the city’s streets, as we are about to read more in the Ripple news today.

According to the New York Times, Ripple’s Chris Larsen paid to have a network of 1000 cameras installed as a part of the effort to cut down the crime in the city especially theft crimes. Larsen said that he sees his drive as an alternative system of urban security and hopes it will become a “model of other cities.” Larsen was quoted saying:

“[Criminals] don’t care at all. They don’t care if they’re being seen. It’s brazen.”

Larsen said that he started contemplating the idea after his father-in-law’s car was stolen and his own car windows were smashed. However, his decision came to act in 2011 when a group of men climbed into his garden and one of them cut the wires of the home security system while the children were sleeping inside the house. This was the time when Larsen decided he had enough. Since then, he spent more than $4 million into buying HD cameras and paying to have them maintained in order to monitor footages and help the police take action.

Larsen’s network covers 135 blocks in San Francisco and the Ripple co-founder said that he helped to pay for some internet connections at the police stations in the city but the same report quotes a police official stating:

“We do not work with Mr. Larsen. There is a process for the department to request footage from the party that manages the cameras. That party has the discretion whether or not to release footage to [the police].”

Larsen added that he hoped to see one day a full-city camera coverage which will allow police to play a smaller role. The report concluded:

“Individual vigilantism will not work, Larsen argued, but strong neighborhoods with continuous video feeds on every corner will.”

Chris Larsen previously warned that the United States was a “risking chaos” by letting China get in on the blockchain technology race and developing new, modern solutions that could surpass the United States in any given industry.
